It has been a busy and interesting week for Oakham Biologists.
Pupils visited the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust’s ‘Allerton Project’ in Loddington, Leicestershire, with the kind permission of Dr Alastair Leake, Director of the Trust. The Allerton Project is a charitable trust dedicated to researching sustainable but non-organic farming and conservation methods. The biologists were introduced to the techniques needed to undertake practical ecology investigations and had access to the 800-acre site. They used transects, sampled earthworms and captured insects for their research and studies.
A large cohort of pupils also participated in the Biology Olympiad, run under the auspices of the Royal Society of Biology, results of which are due later in the year. The competition consisted of a one-hour multiple-choice paper taken online and is open to students in the first year of post-16 education anywhere in the world.
Next week is also set to be an engaging one with the continuation of extension activities, helping to broaden and deepen the pupils’ knowledge of the subject. There will be practice panel interviews for clinical course applicants, a trip to Twycross Zoo for ESS students, and the annual UCAT preparation course run by doctors from The Medic Portal.
