The 1584 Society met on 11 December for its second event of the year – an online ‘Winter Wine Tasting’. Members from across the UK, as well as the USA and Australia, joined for an evening of wine and good cheer. Peter Lawson, the 1584 Society President, hosted the evening, welcoming the guests and giving an update on the Society and the Foundation to the donors.
The Headmaster, Henry Price, spoke about the challenges of the past year, but struck a positive tone as he looked back on all the School has been able to achieve, continuing to provide outstanding education throughout the year, whether online or in person. Henry was full of praise for the adaptations that every department has made, highlighting the success of the music and drama departments in providing online access of their performances, and sport making its return this winter term.
Henry and Peter then turned the floor over to OO Marcus Welford (87) for the evening’s main event. Marcus shared his extensive expertise as he guided participants through a tasting of three delicious wines – a Methode Traditionelle sparkling, a Riesling and a Primitivo – exploring their provenance, flavours and pairings, before taking questions from a contented audience.
