Oakham School siblings Will and Beth delivered a winning weekend at the County Championships, each claiming victory in their respective events and showcasing their talent and determination on the track.
Form 2 pupil Beth got the weekend off to a flying start with a brilliant win in the U15 800m. Competing as a bottom-age athlete, she ran a smart tactical race – sitting behind the leader for the first lap before taking control at the halfway point. When challenged with 200m to go, Beth showed true grit, finding another gear in the final 100m to sprint past her rival and claim the gold in 2:30.
Fifth Former Will followed shortly after in the U17 800m, facing tough competition in a fast field. He held his own impressively, finishing 4th with a personal best time of 2:04 – just behind the winner, who clocked 2:01.
Sunday: Will Wins 1500m Title, Beth Fights to a Podium Finish
On Sunday, it was Will’s turn to top the podium. He stormed to victory in the U17 1500m final, successfully defending the title he won last year. Taking the lead early, Will controlled the race from the front and pulled away decisively with 300m to go, crossing the line in 4:18 to retain the cup.
Despite battling a foot injury, Beth showed remarkable resilience in the U15 1500m. She pushed through the pain to secure a strong 3rd place finish with a time of 5:20 – a great result to round off a weekend that saw both siblings earn podium places and celebrate race wins.
Congratulations to Will and Beth for an outstanding weekend of athletics — and for bringing home two county titles for Oakham School!
