Form 6 Enjoy Day of Design Inspiration in London
Form 6 Design and Technology students had an inspiring day in London, gaining valuable design insights at Black+Blum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Design and Technology Scholars Henry and Izzy share the story of their day exploring creativity and design excellence in the capital.
Our Form 6 pupils embarked on an exciting journey to London, starting with a train ride to King’s Cross followed by a Tube trip to Southwark, where the Black+Blum office is located. Upon arrival, co-founder Dan Black warmly welcomed us and led us to his meeting room. He shared the fascinating history of the company, detailing its evolution from creating lighting products to the innovative lunchware they are renowned for today.
Dan showcased a variety of products designed by Black+Blum in recent years, highlighting the creative thought processes behind them. Notable designs included a lunch box with a chopping board lid and the explorer flask duo with cups at each end. Pupils were impressed by the clever integration of functionality and design.
Dan also discussed Dieter Rams’ 10 principles of good design, emphasising aesthetics, value addition, usefulness, longevity, and attention to detail. We are grateful to Dan for his valuable insights, which will undoubtedly benefit pupils in their future design studies.
After a quick lunch break, the afternoon was spent at the Victoria and Albert Museum, exploring the evolution of design from the 20th to the 21st century. Pupils examined various furniture items, observing how material choices and production techniques have advanced. This visit provided valuable inspiration for their coursework and future projects.
