Oakham Rugby Players Enjoy Masterclass with Jonny Wilkinson

It was a day that eleven Oakham rugby players will be talking about for years. Selected for their playmaking and kicking potential, the group – spanning U13 to 1st XV – travelled to England’s elite rugby training centre at Pennyhill Park for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: a full masterclass with rugby legend Jonny Wilkinson.

Under the towering goalposts, the boys lined up alongside one of the sport’s greatest ever fly‑halves, ready to absorb every ounce of insight he could offer. What followed was a transformative day of technical drills, precision kicking sessions and open, honest discussions about mindset, performance and personal growth.

This exceptional experience was made possible thanks to the Global Rugby Players Foundation (GRPF). We are also extremely grateful to parent Brian McArthur‑Muscroft for generously sharing his auction prize from the GRPF Founders Dinner with the School.

Reflecting on the day, Head of Sports Science, Simon Woodward, said: “Jonny was genuine and the care and passion he has for the game and for improving people really came across… the boys benefited no end as a result. An amazing day with a true modern legend.”

Director of Rugby Rupert Harden added: “It was a privilege for our players to learn from someone of Jonny’s calibre. His clarity, humility and attention to detail made a huge impression on the boys.”

And the timing could not have been better for Oakham rugby. Less than 24 hours later, the 1st XV boys went on to win their National Plate Final against Taunton School. With County Cup finals on the horizon for our U15 and U16 boys this week, there’s lots more chances this year for our athletes to put the lessons learned at Pennyhill Park into practice.

This was a remarkable opportunity for our young athletes, and one they will remember for many years to come.
