That’s why we offer one of the broadest and most flexible academic programmes in the country, allowing every student to follow a pathway that reflects their strengths, aspirations and preferred approach to learning.
Whether their interests lie in science, business, the arts, sport, languages or the humanities, our academic pathways combine expert teaching, individual guidance and exceptional opportunities beyond the classroom. Students can choose between A-levels and BTECs or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, which Oakham has proudly delivered for over 25 years, enabling them to build a programme that is right for them and their future goals.
A-levels and BTECs
A-levels and BTECs allow students to focus on the subjects they enjoy most and explore them in greater depth. Most students study three subjects, creating a personalised programme built around their interests, strengths and future ambitions.
Students choose from more than 25 subjects across the sciences, humanities, languages, creative arts, technology, business and sport. Oakham also offers two BTEC qualifications, Business and Sports Science, which can be studied alongside A-levels and provide an alternative style of learning for students who enjoy a combination of coursework and examinations.
For those who prefer a broader programme of study across six subjects, Oakham offers the International Baccalaureate DP.
The Right Choice
A-levels and BTECs are ideal for students who have clear academic interests and are ready to specialise. Rather than studying a broad range of subjects, students focus their time and energy on the areas they most enjoy and may wish to pursue at university or in future careers.
This pathway offers flexibility for students whose strengths lie in different styles of learning. A-levels are primarily assessed through examinations at the end of two years, whilst BTECs combine coursework, projects and external assessments throughout the programme.
Many students choose this route because it allows them to develop deeper subject expertise while maintaining time for sport, performing arts, leadership opportunities and other interests beyond the classroom.
Subject Options
Students can select from a wide range of A-level subjects including Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English Literature, History, Geography, Economics, Politics, Psychology, Computer Science, Art & Design, Drama, Music and many more.
Alongside these subjects, Oakham offers BTEC qualifications in Business and Sports Science, enabling students to combine academic and vocational approaches within a single programme.

Extended Project Qualification
Many students studying A-levels choose to complete an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). The EPQ provides an opportunity to research a topic of personal interest, develop independent study skills and produce a substantial project or dissertation.
The qualification is highly valued by universities because it encourages students to think critically, manage a long-term project and explore ideas beyond their classroom studies.
For anyone planning to pursue competitive university courses, the EPQ can be an excellent way to demonstrate intellectual curiosity and academic independence.
Academic Support and Tutoring
Sixth Form students are encouraged to take increasing ownership of their learning, but they are never expected to do so alone. Dedicated tutors, subject teachers and pastoral staff work closely with students to support academic progress, study skills, time management and future planning.
