This week’s Music at Lunchtime recital was a particularly special occasion, as Form 7 soprano Evie gave her final performance at Oakham School. Accompanied by Anne Bolt on piano—and joined by violin teacher Emily Holland for the final piece—Evie presented a beautifully curated programme, rich in emotional depth and musical sensitivity.
The recital opened with a trio of French mélodies, reflecting Evie’s love of languages. Chausson’s Le Colibri and Hahn’s Si mes vers avaient des ailes were delivered with elegance and poise, while Debussy’s Les Cloches revealed Evie’s ability to shape atmosphere and tone with great finesse.
Gurney’s Sleep, from ‘Five Elizabethan Songs’, introduced a more melancholic mood, its longing for rest and escape rendered with touching sincerity. Evie’s control and vocal warmth gave the song a gentle but powerful emotional weight.
Three German Lieder brought the programme to a close: Schumann’s Röselein, Röselein!, and two by Richard Strauss—Du meines Herzens Krönelein and Morgen!. The final piece, with its soaring violin line played by Ms Holland, was particularly moving: a tender farewell that left a lasting impression on the audience.
Evie’s final recital was a heartfelt and accomplished performance—one that will be remembered with admiration and affection.

Oakham School Music at Lunchtime recitals will return on Wednesday 3 September, however, All Saints will have regular concerts in the church over the summer holidays.
