Music at Lunchtime: Classical Contrasts

This week’s Music at Lunchtime recital featured Lizzie (Form 6) on violin, accompanied by Cason Kang. Her programme brought together the Classical elegance of Mozart with the expressive flair of late-Romantic composer Christian Sinding.

The recital opened with the first movement of Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major, K.219. This bright and spirited Allegro aperto was composed when Mozart was only 19, yet already shows his flair for combining poise with brilliance. Lizzie handled the shifting character of the movement with assurance, capturing both the stately introduction and the playful lyricism that followed. Her phrasing had warmth and shape, and the dialogue between violin and piano was well balanced.

In an interesting reversal of order, the next work was Sinding’s Suite in A minor, with Lizzie choosing to begin with the second movement, Adagio. This gentle and expressive movement offered a lovely contrast to the Mozart. Her playing here was particularly thoughtful, with long, singing lines and careful attention to tone and dynamics. The final work, the first movement of the same suite (Allegro), brought the recital to an energetic close. The rapid string crossings and rhythmic drive were executed with control and stamina, especially given its placement at the end of the programme.

The recording from this week’s concert will be available online here.

Well done to Lizzie and Mr Kang for an impressive performance.

Our next Music at Lunchtime recital will be on Wednesday 18 June 2025 and feature Form 7 pupil Lily, performing music for voice from Evita, Fame and Waitress.
