Scholars Test Their Skills in Murder Mystery Challenge
Oakham School’s Academic Scholars in Forms 3 and 4 took on a fast-paced murder mystery challenge that tested their intellectual curiosity, teamwork and problem-solving abilities.
Designed and organised by Head of Middle School Scholars, Sam Janes, the off-timetable activity transformed students into detectives tasked with solving a fictional crime. Working in teams, Scholars tackled a series of escape room-style challenges that required them to apply knowledge from a wide range of academic disciplines to identify the culprit.
Throughout the morning, students moved between departments across the School, completing different tasks. In Chemistry, they used chromatography techniques to analyse evidence, while in Biology they put their scientific skills to work through DNA profiling. Elsewhere, they encountered advanced Physics concepts that introduced them to A-level work and challenged them to learn and apply unfamiliar equations.
The investigation also took the Scholars far beyond the sciences. Students completed a network mapping task, undertook political profiling, and cracked encrypted codes. One particularly demanding challenge required them to translate Haitian Creole using a combination of provided resources, including a basic glossary and French language references, before applying their findings to narrow down the list of suspects.
Mr Janes explained: “Each challenge included extension material, and the students then had to apply what they had learned to narrow down the list of suspects.”
“The students were all challenged and I think they really enjoyed the twist at the end. It was a really fun way of extending their knowledge and developing their problem-solving skills.”
The session encouraged Scholars not only to draw upon existing knowledge but also to engage confidently with new concepts and material beyond their normal curriculum. The winning team impressed staff with their exceptional analytical thinking, creativity and ability to work collaboratively under pressure.
While Academic Scholars regularly participate in seminars and discussions designed to broaden their intellectual horizons, the murder mystery offered a very different type of challenge. By combining elements of science, languages, mathematics, politics and cryptography, the activity provided an exciting opportunity for pupils to apply their learning in a practical and highly engaging way.
The event is another example of Oakham School’s commitment to stretching and inspiring its most academically able students, encouraging them to think critically, embrace new challenges and develop the skills needed to tackle complex problems with confidence.
