Oakham’s 1st XV Crowned U18 National Champions

Oakham School’s 1st XV rugby team have been crowned U18 National Champions after a commanding 38–24 victory over Taunton School in the Continental Tyres U18 Plate Final.

The final showcased the strength, discipline, and attacking flair that have defined Oakham’s season. Two early tries from second row Ottó and hooker Parker from the back of a rolling maul meant Oakham was leading 12-0 before Taunton rallied to bring the game to within 2 points. Maintaining composure under Taunton’s continued pressure was vital, and Oakham re‑asserted their dominance with clinical finishing and resolute defence. Further tries followed: flanker Mackinley cutting a smart line, Parker adding his second from close range, but again Taunton fought back to close the gap to one score. In a nail-biting end to the game Will H created a bit of daylight with a close range try before scoring the try of the match, who supported a superb break by captain Will C to put the game beyond reach and sealing an emphatic victory.

Director of Rugby Rupert Harden praised the team’s physicality, commitment, and focus, emphasising the simple but powerful message he gave the squad ahead of kick-off: “Enjoy the experience, be physical, work really hard, and understand your roles. If we do those four things, we’ll win it.”

He also highlighted the squad’s work ethic throughout the year, noting that preparation had been “a real squad effort”. A strong foundation laid before Christmas followed by a a tough but timely test against Ellesmere in the semi-final helped sharpen the group’s focus. “That match was a good reminder of where we needed to work,” said Harden. “Today we came out and delivered exactly what we knew we were capable of.”

Captain Will C reflected proudly on the team’s journey and the significance of the occasion, describing the final as the perfect culmination to a long and demanding season.
“Go out, have fun, stay calm, and see what we can do.” he told his teammates before the match.

After lifting the trophy, Will said the team felt “great” and that they had “put in a performance to be proud of”. Looking ahead, he also expressed confidence and excitement for the upcoming Rosslyn Park National Sevens, adding that the squad has already enjoyed positive results on the sevens circuit this term and are “ready to rip into it”.

This national title is a significant moment for Oakham rugby, celebrating not only the talent and determination of the players, but also the dedication of the coaching staff and the depth of the School’s rugby programme.
