Oakham Delegates Make Their Mark at MUN Conference

A spirited delegation of Oakham School pupils stepped into the shoes of world leaders at the prestigious Model United Nations (MUN) Conference hosted by Cheadle Hulme School. Joining students from across the UK, they represented 62 nations in a dynamic simulation of the United Nations General Assembly.

Oakham’s delegates proudly represented Canada, Rwanda, and Panama, passionately advocating their assigned countries’ policies on a range of pressing global issues. From Haiti’s security crisis and the role of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to deforestation, the Palestine conflict, drug trafficking, and the death penalty, students tackled complex topics with poise and precision.

Laurence Ward, Lead Teacher, praised the pupils’ commitment: “Pupils act as delegates from particular countries, and represent those countries’ views in various committees. Their aim is to construct and pass resolutions which deal with assorted problems faced by the world.”

The conference demanded rigorous research, persuasive debate, and active listening. Students were challenged to argue both for and against scenarios, often stepping outside their personal beliefs to understand diverse perspectives, developing valuable life skills.

Model United Nations (MUN) is a popular and enriching activity for our Sixth Form students, offering valuable opportunities to develop key skills such as public speaking, teamwork, and negotiation. Conferences like the recent event at Cheadle Hulme allow students to put these skills into practice in a dynamic, real-world setting.
