Celebrating Outstanding GCSE Results for the Class of 2025

21st August 2025

Oakham School is celebrating another very strong year of GCSE results, with pupils achieving personal success across a broad range of subjects. This year’s cohort achieved 20% Grade 9, 38% Grade 9-8, and 55% Grade 9-7, marking three-year highs across all measures.

Headmaster Henry Price commented:

“Every single result matters, and today we celebrate all those individual accomplishments. Whether a pupil has achieved top grades across the board or worked hard to secure a pass in a subject they found challenging, each success is the result of their personal determination, underpinned by the support of the whole Oakham community.

These results are not achieved in isolation. It takes a whole community – teachers, tutors, house staff, parents, and peers – to guide and support our pupils. I am grateful to my colleagues across the School for the care and expertise they bring to their work every day.”

From the outset, pupils at Oakham take ownership of their academic journey, choosing subjects that reflect their interests and aspirations. This year’s cohort was the first to benefit from complete flexibility in choosing between 8, 9, or 10+ GCSE subjects, allowing each pupil to tailor their timetable to suit their individual strengths and commitments.

Deputy Head Academic Dr Leo Dudin added:

“These results are a testament to the pupils’ self-management, focus, and resilience. Alongside their academic studies, they have balanced co-curricular commitments, developed independent study habits, and embraced the challenge of learning how to learn.

Our academic framework, including targeted revision workshops and individual supported studies, has helped pupils build confidence and deepen their understanding. We have also worked closely with parents to ensure they have the insight needed to support their children at home.”

The GCSE journey at Oakham begins well before the examination hall. Pupils are fully supported in choosing their GCSEs, and start to explore Upper School subject options during Form 4 project days. Throughout Form 5 they build momentum through marginal gains – week by week, term by term.

Head of Middle School Nick Favill reflected:

“This has been a journey of sustained motivation and long-term planning. Pupils have shown real maturity in managing the demands of their current studies while thoughtfully preparing for the next stage of their academic journey.

Whether they are elite musicians taking fewer GCSEs to allow time for practice, or aspirational academics stretching themselves with up to 13 options, Oakham pupils are carving out pathways that reflect their individual styles and ambitions.”

Every pupil’s personal timetable includes time for co-curricular pursuits, private study and pastoral curriculum lessons that are embedded into the school week. This holistic approach – our Connected Curriculum – ensures that academic success is supported by wellbeing, personal development, and a sense of belonging.

These GCSE results reflect the breadth of achievement across disciplines and the strength of Oakham’s academic provision, exemplified by 13 pupils achieving straight Grade 9s and 8s. Standout subject performances include an impressive 49% Grades 9–8 in History, 44% in Geography, 40% in Drama and 38% in Citizenship and Combined Science.

As the Class of 2025 looks ahead to the challenges and opportunities of Sixth Form, these results provide a strong foundation for future success. They reflect not only the academic strengths of Oakham pupils but also their resilience, balance, and ambition. The School takes great pride in celebrating these achievements and in continuing to nurture each pupil’s potential as they move confidently into the next stage of their academic journey.

Families are warmly invited to experience Oakham’s academic and co-curricular opportunities first-hand at our upcoming Sixth Form Open Evening on Wednesday 18 September or our Whole School Open Morning on Saturday 27 September.
