GCSEs

Middle School is a time of exploration, growing independence and exciting new opportunities. At Oakham, we believe academic success comes from a broad, balanced education that encourages students to think deeply, discover new interests and develop confidence in their own abilities. Through inspiring teaching, individual support and a rich co-curricular programme, students are challenged to achieve their best while continuing to enjoy a wide range of experiences beyond the classroom.

Unlike other schools, Oakham does not begin GCSE courses in Year 9. We believe students benefit from an additional year of breadth before specialising. Year 9 is therefore a year of discovery, allowing students to build strong foundations across a wide range of subjects, develop study skills and explore new interests. GCSE courses begin in Year 10, giving students two focused years to prepare for examinations whilst retaining flexibility and choice for longer.

Most students study nine GCSEs, following a broad and ambitious curriculum designed to encourage intellectual curiosity, deeper thinking and meaningful connections between subjects. For some students, it may be appropriate to follow a personalised pathway of eight GCSEs, allowing additional time for individual learning needs, specialist support or significant co-curricular commitments, including the GCSE Sporting Futures Pathway.

Core Subjects

All students study a broad core curriculum that provides the academic foundation for future success. This includes English Language and Literature, Mathematics, Science, a modern foreign language and a humanities subject. Alongside these academic disciplines, students continue to develop critical thinking, creativity, communication skills and intellectual curiosity.

Science Pathways

Our science pathways allow learning to be tailored to students’ strengths, interests and aspirations. Options include Combined Science (resulting in 2 GCSEs awarded) or Separate Sciences (with 2 or 3 GCSEs awarded). This approach ensures every student can follow a pathway that is both challenging and appropriate for their future plans.

Whether their interests lie in the arts, humanities, languages, technology or sport, students have the opportunity to shape a GCSE programme that reflects who they are and who they hope to become. Our broad offering encourages exploration while helping students prepare for future A Level, BTEC or IB Diploma choices.

GCSE Sporting Futures

The Sporting Futures pathway combines academic study with high-quality coaching and performance support. Students benefit from specialist guidance, strength and conditioning opportunities and access to Oakham’s outstanding sporting environment, enabling them to pursue ambitious sporting goals alongside academic success.

Study Support and Tutoring

Developing effective study habits is an important part of success at GCSE. Students receive guidance on organisation, revision techniques, time management and independent learning. Subject teachers, tutors and pastoral staff work closely together to monitor progress, provide encouragement and help every student build the confidence and resilience needed to thrive.

Learning Support and English as an Additional Language

Every student learns differently, and support is tailored to individual needs. Our Learning Support team provides targeted guidance for students who would benefit from additional assistance, helping them access the curriculum with confidence. Students who speak English as an Additional Language receive personalised support designed to strengthen language skills whilst enabling them to participate fully in school life and academic learning.
