About Us

Middle School (Years 9-11)

Middle School is where students begin to shape their own Oakham journey. It is a time of exploration, growing independence and increasing self-awareness, as young people discover what inspires them, where their strengths lie and how they can contribute to the communities around them.

Supported by dedicated staff and a strong House community, every student is encouraged to participate fully, embrace challenge and develop the confidence to be themselves.

Learning is connected, purposeful and designed to broaden horizons. Through academic study, sport, the creative arts, leadership opportunities, service projects and adventures beyond the classroom, students gain the knowledge, skills and character that will prepare them not only to select and take their GCSEs, but for a lifetime of learning, contribution and fulfilment.

Form 3 – exciting new experiences

Building on the foundations laid in Lower School, Form 3 (Year 9) students begin to explore subjects in greater depth, studying separate sciences, languages and humanities while continuing to make connections across the curriculum. Interdisciplinary projects help students see how knowledge fits together and applies beyond the classroom. For example, a project on Warfare and Medicine links their study of the First World War in History with learning about blood transfusion in Biology, before challenging them in Design Technology to consider how portable medical equipment could have been designed using only materials available in 1916.

The Form 3 Project extends learning even further, going beyond the curriculum and encouraging students to think broadly, participate fully and embrace new experiences. Opportunities include a visit to the First World War battlefields in France, performing in the annual Gala Music Concert, undertaking an independent research project and taking part in a summer activity camp.

Forms 4 and 5 – shaping a pathway

As students move into Forms 4 and 5, they begin to shape a curriculum that reflects their individual interests, strengths and aspirations. Supported by expert teachers and our Futures Department, students choose from a wide range of subjects, creating a programme of study that is both ambitious and personal.

All students study English Language, English Literature, Science and Mathematics, alongside options including History, Geography, Religion and Philosophy, French, Spanish, German, Drama, Dance, Music, Art, Design &Technology, Citizenship Studies, Classical Civilisation, Computer Science, Greek, Latin and Physical Education. Students with a particular passion for sport can also explore the GCSE Sporting Futures Pathway, combining academic study with enhanced support for high-level sporting development.

In some specific subjects we offer the IGCSE qualification, which we believe provides the most appropriate academic preparation at this stage. IGCSEs have equivalent status to GCSEs with universities and employers.
