Lower School (Years 7-8)

Lower School is where the Oakham journey begins. In our dedicated Houses, purposefully designed for Years 7 and 8, we provide a supportive introduction to senior school life, helping students settle quickly, feel they belong and grow in confidence.

Through specialist teaching, exceptional opportunities beyond the classroom and a culture that encourages exploration and participation, students develop the curiosity, character and independence that will help them thrive throughout their time at Oakham and beyond.

Small class sizes (typically 15-18 students), personal tutors and strong relationships with teachers mean every child is known and supported to achieve their personal best. Students are encouraged and challenged according to their needs and interests, whether that means additional support, greater academic stretch or both. Our specialist Learning Support team works closely with students, families and teachers to help every child thrive.
Within our dedicated Lower School Houses, your child will be truly known and cared for by an experienced team led by their Housemaster/Housemistress, matron, and tutor.

This warm, homely environment ensures your child is known, understood, and encouraged to grow. Houses are open from 7.30am–6.00pm each day, giving families invaluable flexibility. Day students benefit from our extended day, with an after-school homework club and three nutritious meals included in the fees. Children can also board flexibly, with two free nights per term – a great way to experience our structured, sociable boarding life.
With inclusive sports teams, creative enrichment, outdoor learning, and fun social events, your child will build confidence, friendships, and a strong sense of belonging – developing skills and memories to last a lifetime. Highlights include free instrumental music lessons in Year 7, Adventurous Learning camps in Year 7 and 8, and an annual Lower School Drama Production.
Your child will be encouraged to thrive – whether they’re academically ambitious or athletically gifted. Our Academic Scholarship and Music Scholarship programmes identify and nurture individual potential, while our Sport Scholarships support elite development. For those keen to grow their sporting talents, the Sporting Talent Project offers a fun and inclusive programme that builds skills and encourages teamwork.
