Welcome to Oakham School

Oakham School stands proudly in Rutland’s historic market town of Oakham, its home for almost 450 years.

Set across a generous 70-acre campus, the School is a vibrant, dynamic community where young people are encouraged to explore widely, challenge themselves confidently and discover what inspires them.

A warm welcome from Lucy Pearson, Head

At Oakham School, we believe in giving young people the breadth, challenge and support they need to discover what inspires them and make the most of their time at school. We celebrate diversity, encourage students to get involved and create opportunities for them to develop their strengths, interests and ambitions.

Our unique balance of boarding and day students is central to Oakham’s character. There isn’t a boarding school and a day school here – there is one Oakham. Students belong equally within their Houses, sharing the same academic, pastoral and co-curricular life.

An Oakham education stretches far beyond a single set of academic results. We want students to develop the confidence, character, judgement and capability to make the most of whatever comes next. Through Student-Shaped Learning, students increasingly take ownership of their education, supported to make choices and shape a path around their own strengths, interests and ambitions.

Our Culture of Care is at the heart of this. Every student should feel seen, known and valued, with trusted adults around them to support and encourage them as they grow. Our House System is central to that experience, giving every young person a community where they belong and opportunities to contribute, take responsibility and develop their independence.

Oakham has always been a school prepared to pursue its own path. As a community, we have a history of innovating and adapting to the world around us, from becoming fully co-educational in 1971 to introducing the International Baccalaureate into our Sixth Form curriculum in 2001. Today, that same spirit is reflected in the breadth of our academic programme, co-curricular life and opportunities for students to discover what they can do.

I also speak confidently of Oakham as a proud Old Oakhamian. Many of the qualities I experienced as a student here – endeavour, dedication, good humour, resilience and community – remain part of the School today. Whilst Oakham will always evolve, its character remains distinctive: a place where young people are known and cared for, where energy and creativity are welcomed, and where individual achievement sits alongside collective success.

An Oakham education isn’t something you simply complete. It’s something you carry with you.

I would encourage you to visit us and experience Oakham for yourself. Meet our students, explore our campus and Houses, and discover how your child could make their own path here.

"It’s no surprise Oakham was recognised in Tatler’s Schools Guide 2025 and shortlisted for ‘Best Public School’ – they truly set the gold standard for education and holistic development. We couldn’t be prouder to be part of the Oakham family.”

Read our glowing review in The Good Schools Guide

Capturing all aspects of School life, The Good Schools Guide review always provides an in-depth look at life at Oakham. This year, we were delighted to receive a fantastic review which shone a light on our connected curriculum and vast co-curricular offering.

The Good Schools Guide team summarised their review by saying: “Taking a hint from the school motto, ‘Et quasi cursores vitai lampada tradunt’ (‘And, like runners, they pass on the torch of life’), this is a place best suited to those who want to be involved and active all day long, on the sports field and off”.

Known for its quirky and stylish approach, Muddy Stilettos visited Oakham for its Best Schools Guide 2022 and captured the history and “impressive facilities” at Oakham.

We loved what they said about our pastoral care:

“Oakham is a fast-paced, joiner-in kind of school so pastoral care is paramount. To its credit, Oakham’s pastoral offering doesn’t appear to be Covid bolt-on and is central to the school’s ethos. Aside from AS tracking and the normal PHSE, work is done in houses to encourage ‘self-checking’ which includes working on routines like developing a healthy sleep routine.”
