As part of Oakham’s commitment to developing cultural understanding and international mindedness in our pupils – to prepare them for life in today’s global society – we have spent the last few years developing international exchanges with a number of schools around the world.
We hope that these insights into life in other countries will help our students to develop greater cultural understanding and independence, whilst generating friendships that may last a lifetime.
Our exchange programmes with schools in the USA and Australia involve selected Upper School pupils playing host to students from these countries and having the opportunity to make a reciprocal visit to their partner.
As members of the World Leading Schools Association (WLSA), we have recently participated in the prestigious East to West scheme. At the start of 2016 we played host to Chinese exchange students who, as part of their two-week visit, enjoyed attending lessons and visiting the local area with their Oakhamian partners. As part of the cultural experience, Oakham students tried their hand at calligraphy, Chinese cooking and Chinese knot making, as well as practising Mandarin with their exchange partner.
