Oakham’s Design Technology Department mentioned in The House of Commons

Alicia Kearns, MP for Rutland and Melton, used her first parliamentary speech of 2021 as an opportunity to thank and give recognition to the many members of her constituency who have provided significant help and support to the local community during 2020.

She said as we see the light at the end of the tunnel, I thank all those in Rutland and Melton who have borne the costs with such grace and selflessness over the last year—those who have helped each other under the toughest domestic conditions we have seen since the war. In particular, I wish to recognise Tim Weston and his fellow teachers and students at Oakham School, and Rutland Plastics. In the first lockdown, they made so many tens of thousands of visors that I arranged the delivery of masks to hospitals and settings all around the country.”

She continued, thanking a number of other local residents and her full speech can be read here > https://www.theyworkforyou.com/debates/?id=2021-01-12b.205.0#g231.0

We are absolutely delighted that all of the hard work and efforts of Oakham’s Design and Technology Department, along with an extensive team of dedicated volunteer teachers and support staff, who made and then helped to deliver an astonishing 30,000 visors for Key Workers, has been acknowledged in the Houses of Parliament.

“It seems fitting to again quote Helen Keller – that ‘Alone we can do little; together we can do so much’,” says Tim Weston, Head of Oakham’s Design Technology Department. “It was only through the combined effort of many that we were able to make so many visors.  It was through the kind generosity of Rutland Plastics, the donations of key supplies from supportive companies such as Fellowes, and the wonderfully generous donations from across our School, alumni and local communities, that we were able to expand and upscale our production to make a real difference when it was needed most. We are proud to have been able to play our part and we thank Alicia Kearns for her kind words in Parliament, as well as her support in getting the PPE out to those who needed it across the country.”
