Oakham School welcomes Major Ram, a representative of the 'Nepal Fundraising project'

Oakham School welcomed Major Ram, a representative of Annapurna Junior High School in Nepal, which is supported by Oakham’s Upper School pupils as part of their ‘Nepal Fundraising project’.

The project is mainly student-led and is part of the CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) element of their IB Diploma. It provides challenges to show initiative, problem solving, and develop skills in cooperation and teamwork. Moreover it  encourages the pupils to become open-minded and self-aware, through their engagement in globally significant issues. A-level pupils have also contributed to the project over the past three years, developing their leadership and ‘soft’ skills.

Major Ram has a long relationship with the School and during his visit, he gave a talk to the pupils about the impact of their work. Despite Covid restrictions last year, Oakham’s pupils still managed to raise money to support the School, paying for the teachers and resources that are so desperately needed.

Nepal CAS project leader, Jennifer Hollering said, “We were delighted to welcome Major Ram to the School. He gave an enlightening talk to our pupils about the importance of their fundraising and how it has helped improve education and life chances for children on the other side of the world.”

In previous years Oakham pupils have had the opportunity to visit the School in Nepal as part of an adventurous summer trekking expedition and saw for themselves the difference their fundraising efforts have made.
