Oakham School Lunchtime Concert l Chamber Choir

The final Lunchtime concert for this academic year was given by the Chamber Choir, superbly conducted by our Director of Music, Mr Peter Davis. There could not have been a more fitting and poignant way to round of an exceptional year. The Chamber Choir began with an ethereal reading of three unaccompanied movements from Seven Poems of Robert Bridges by Gerald Finzi. These complex, quintessentially English songs were performed with tenderness, exquisite balance, breath-taking control and attention to detail.

The Blue Bird by Charles Villiers Stanford was the Chamber choirs next offering. This was another evocative and highly expressive performance. The solo soprano part was exquisitely performed by Saffie Edgson who’s voice soared gracefully and with such clarity above the hushed harmonies of the choir.

The concluding work on the program was Vaughn Williams’ majestic Lord, thou hast been our refuge. Our soloists for this performance were Bethany Davis, Soprano and Ben Kelly, Baritone. Their voices blended beautifully and with great focus in the solo chant-like passages tenderly responded to by the choir. Lizzie Beamish provided the solo Trumpet and Mr Harry Jacques the mighty Organ for the rapturous climax of this deeply moving and uplifting work. The choir joined in with great fervour leading to the triumphant final chord that resonated around the school chapel.

This was a truly profound musical experience leaving a powerful impression on the captivated audience.
