Oakham’s 1st VI has successfully qualified for the National Indoor Hockey Finals, after being crowned Midlands champions in an incredibly fierce regional tournament held at the weekend.
“Hockey continues to go from strength to strength at Oakham,” says Director of Hockey, James Bateman. “This is the fifth consecutive year that our teams have won places in the National Indoor Finals – which is a testament to the talents and dedication of our pupils, as well as the exceptionally high quality of our hockey coaching.”
“Even more impressively, over the last 11 years, Oakham’s hockey teams have played in the National Indoor Finals a staggering nine times,” adds James. “With pupils playing in regional clubs such as Beeston and Leicester, as well as going on to represent their country (in England and Germany), Oakham really is one of the UK’s leading schools for hockey.”
On the road to the National Finals, Oakham’s 1st VI have won against Rugby 8-0, Warwick 4-2 and Trent 5-2 in the early part of the competition, then they went on to beat Ecclesbourne (3-1) in the Semi-Final before winning against Repton 5-3 in the Regional Finals.
The team is now looking forward to the National Finals, taking place at Whitgift School in January, where they hope to better their placing from 2018 when they were National Silver Medallists in both indoor and national outdoor competitions.
This news comes at the end of an incredibly successful term for Oakham Hockey. Not only have Becca (Form 6) and Tilly (Form 4) been selected as members of the England National Age Group (NAGS) Hockey U18 and U16 squads, but 20 boys have been selected for the National Performance Centre and National Academy Centre in a variety of locations including Leicestershire & Rutland, Nottingham, Northants, Cambridgeshire, Durham and Yorkshire.
The U16 & U18 girls' teams also reached both the Indoor County and Regional Hockey Finals.
