Oakham’s busy concert schedule continued on Friday night in the Chapel with several of our leading ensembles: Chamber Orchestra, Polyphonix, Wind Band and Big Band.
The concert was opened by The Wind Band led by Mr Steve Foster. They performed a film-based programme including the themes from Jurassic Park and Mission Impossible. It was great to see so many young Oakham School musicians playing in this ensemble. Polyphonix was up next, performing Love Yourself by Justin Bieber and Skyfall, originally sung by Adele. They sang beautifully under the direction of Mr David Williams, giving great contrast between the songs. The last group before the interval was Chamber Orchestra featuring Middle School soloists; Findlay, Maya, Emily, Natasha and Lucy. Findlay started the programme playing the Adagio from J C Bach’s Cello Concerto in C Minor, this was a really mature performance from such a young cellist. Maya, Emily, Natasha and Lucy then played Bach’s Double Violin Concerto, Maya and Emily played the first movement of the concerto and were followed by Natasha playing the second movement and Lucy playing the finale, each joined by the director of the ensemble, Mr Martin Cropper. The Chamber Orchestra accompanied all of the soloists sensitively and expressively in the orchestral solo passages.
After the interval we were treated to the exciting Oakham School Big Band, who were also under the direction of Mr Foster. They played a varying programme from Jazz standards through to famous TV themes. The band played with a punchy, thrilling sound with players across the band performing some impressive solos.
This was a great concert to witness with so many Oakham School students take part.
