Dancers find their rhythm again at Oakham!

Pupils and staff are delighted to start dance classes again after lockdown and the summer break, albeit with a few changes in light of Covid-19.

Dance and Drama teachers, Miss Sarah Murphy and Miss Olivia Ward tell us more about this term’s dance programme:

“We're running curriculum dance classes for Form 1 through to Form 3. Form 1 are currently learning choreography and how to apply choreographic devices, Form 2 are exploring dance of different genres (urban, contemporary & Musical Theatre), and Form 3 are getting a little taster of Musical Theatre as we explore Blood Brothers. Pupils are in year group bubbles and we are following the School’s strict Covid-19-safe guidelines.

During the classes, pupils will partake in rigorous warm-ups that improve their fitness, mobility, strength and flexibility. They will be learning a wide variety of choreography from a number of dance genres, as well as being given opportunities to create their own dance sequences and routines.

We're also running our Wednesday evening dance classes virtually (for the first time) as of this week. We will, however, continue to monitor and review this weekly.

We hope to put on our Lower School Drama & Dance Showcases where pupils will get to perform their rehearsed dance numbers on stage in the QET.

Meanwhile, for the Wednesday evening classes, we hope to end the year with our Dance Showcase. This will allow all participants of the classes to perform in several group pieces that we have worked on in rehearsals, as well as pupils creating and performing their own choreographed pieces.

It has been wonderful to welcome everyone back to the dance studios and the QET, albeit with 'year group bubbles' and social distancing in place. The pupils have adapted quickly to the 'new normal' and are excited to improve their skills and learn more about movement."
