Busy Service Weekend ahead

Oakham pupils have a busy three days ahead, facing an array of challenges as part of their Service Weekend.

They will participate in CCF training, Voluntary Action or their DofE award, pushing themselves out of their comfort zone.

Pupils involved in Voluntary Action will be helping in a number of different areas within the community. Groups of pupils will be painting fences and tidying the pond at English Martyrs Primary School, completing a First Aid Course, litter picking around Oakham and organising various activities for their disabled guests. They will also be working with the local FoodBank collecting and sorting Harvest donations.

Meanwhile, CCF recruits will travel to Norfolk and Cumbria to build on their military training.

Pupils working towards their Bronze, Silver and Gold D of E awards are setting out on their cycling, walking, sailing and canoeing expeditions. A few groups will be cycling and walking in Rutland, Yorkshire, Norfolk and the Peak District, while others will be canoeing down the River Nene, the Grand Union Canal and the Derwent. There will also be pupils sailing on the Solent. The groups have independently planned their journeys, as well as preparing supplies for the weekend.

Service Weekend is a fantastic opportunity for the pupils giving them amazing new experiences. It also gives them a chance to build confidence, resilience, skills and friendships.
