Oakham School was privileged to welcome the renowned musicians of Tim Garland’s Weather Walker Trio to the School Chapel on Thursday 12 September. They have an extraordinary pedigree, having collaborated in the past with such international stars as Ronnie Scott, Chick Corea, Sting and Jeff Beck. A group of music scholars and musicians from the School’s Big Band were privileged to enjoy an afternoon improvisation workshop led by saxophonist Tim Garland and pianist Jason Rebello, focussing on the playfulness of improvising and experimenting with musical ideas. They were hugely inspired by the improvisational prowess of our visiting professionals, and many of the pupils were brave enough to take their first improvisational steps playing alongside Tim and Jason.
Later that evening, the Weather Walker Trio gave the first concert of the school’s Professional Concert Series for 2019-2020, at which they were joined by the virtuoso double bass player Yuri Goloubev. An appreciative audience of pupils, staff and visiting concert-goers were treated to a wonderful programme of largely original music by the trio, demonstrating their remarkable musicianship, technical control and ensemble improvisations. An enormous musical treat for the start of the new school year.
