A group of Oakham's tennis-playing girls escaped to sunny Val do Lobo tennis academy, near Faro in Portugal during the Easter break for training.
The academy is one of the best in Portugal and caters for every level of tennis ability. The days consisted of two 2-hour tennis sessions; working on skill development in the morning, followed by doubles tactics in the afternoon.
Head of Girls PE and Director of Tennis Peta Girdwood said, “The weather was amazing with glorious sunshine and high temperatures. After the girls’ exertions during the day, their late afternoons spent in the swimming pools were a welcome relief.” She continues, “Everyone had a fantastic time and the coaching was great fun. They all worked hard developing their skills and improving their techniques. They now return with more confidence for the season ahead.”
Tennis is one of Oakham’s major sports in the Summer Term. Girls have the opportunity to play from the Lower School all the way through to Form 6. Oakham offers a top quality tennis coaching programme headed up by former ITF ranked and national doubles champion Ralph Clarke. This also provides a link between the School and local clubs with many pupils enjoying playing at club level.
