Three Upper School pupils Oliver, Francesca and Loewe recently attended the Midlands Heat of the RSC Schools Analyst Competition held at Nottingham University.
The competition brought together some of the best young chemists from 15 other schools in the area.
The students worked collaboratively for over 3 hours analysing forensic style samples and carrying out IR spectroscopic analysis in the University’s Chemistry labs. This exercise required laboratory skills, interpretation, and problem solving abilities, within a specified period of time. The students were scored on their ability to work as a team, along with their experimental technique and accuracy of results.
Head of Chemistry Mrs Jo Griffiths said, “The event allowed the students to experience working in a modern university laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment and to take on new challenges. They worked well as a team and really enjoyed the tasks that they were set.”
Although they didn’t secure a place in the final, the students were commended for their enthusiasm throughout the day and their excellent teamwork.
