Student portrait prize winner!
A pupil from Oakham School has won the student portrait prize at The Leicester Society of Artists exhibition, ‘Little Selves’.
Becky, who is currently studying Pre U Art in the Seventh Form at Oakham, won the prize for her painting ‘The Red Scarf’. Art and Design students aged over 16 from schools, academies and colleges throughout Leicestershire and Rutland were all invited to take part in the exhibition, which focuses on the fascinating world of miniature painting. The artists were invited to use any medium of their choice to produce a small portrait of a person past or present, real or imaginary, representational, abstract or symbolic - to prove that small is indeed beautiful.
“It is wonderful that Becky’s painting has been picked out amongst all of the student exhibits,” says Oakham’s Director of Art & Design, Simon Poppy. “It is a beautifully crafted piece that really showcases her talent.”
Becky, who is an Art Scholar at Oakham, is going on to the art foundation course at Loughborough in September as a first step to a career as a professional artist.
Her portrait is on display at New Walk Museum and Art Gallery in Leicester until 25th June. It sits alongside works by professional artists and some rarely seen miniatures from the museum's own collection. Prints and paintings by Oakham Students, Tayte, Ella and Konstantin are also included in the exhibition.
