Today the School Chapel was alive with the sound of Rutland’s primary school pupils practising for their showcase Pied Piper! concert in a week’s time.
“We are delighted to be supporting Rutland Music Hub’s ambitious collective concert,” says Director of Music, Peter Davis. “Featuring 360 pupils from every primary school in the county, along with musicians from Rutland’s three secondary schools and Harington School, it a wonderfully ambitious project made possible only through the vision and hard work of Rutland Music Hub.”
The concert, to be held on Tuesday 15 October at De Montfort Hall, Leicester, will be the culmination of hours of workshops, practices and rehearsals organised and run by Rutland Music Hub – including today’s first massed Primary School rehearsal held at Oakham School.
“Music provides wonderful opportunities for community collaboration and cohesion,” says Peter who, alongside his work at Oakham, is also the Chair of Trustees of Rutland Music Hub, as well as being the composer and conductor of Pied Piper! Peter has brought the children’s literature classic, The Pied Piper, to life by setting Robert Browning’s famous poem to music. “It was important to give the children a narrative they all knew, so they could buy into the project very quickly,” says Peter. “The whole piece was composed specifically for an open access choir – to showcase the talents of different aged children, and to inspire them to keep singing and making music together.”
Music education hubs, managed by the Arts Council, were established to ensure that every child aged 5-18 has the opportunity to sing and learn a musical instrument, and to perform as part of an ensemble or choir. “Before the Music Hub was established in 2012, Rutland, due to its small size, had never had a county-wide music service supporting music-making in state schools,” says Peter, who has been instrumental in helping to establish and develop the Music Hub. Oakham School has been a lead partner supporting singing provision from the outset and in offering consistent support and commitment to building community music-making in the county – including playing host for today’s rehearsal.
