Oakham's U18 Boys Hockey team have gained invaluable training and match practice in their pre-season tour to Barcelona. The 5-day tour saw the boys train hard, play indoor and outdoor fixtures against a mix of British and Spanish teams, and take time out to experience some Spanish culture, before returning to School ready to succeed in their league and cup matches.
After some intensive training on their first day to dust off the post-Christmas cobwebs, day two saw the boys achieve convincing wins against Ardingly (6-1) and Eton (3-0) to start the fixtures off with a bang.
Day three provided a combination of training, a cultural visit to see the Sagrada Familia and an evening fixture against KES Bath. Both teams played some excellent hockey in what was a highly entertaining match and Oakham was unlucky to miss out on a win when KES scored in the last second to equalise.
The following day, their attention then turned to indoor hockey ahead of this weekend’s National Finals. The U18s trained at the impressive Egara facility before taking on the Egara U18 squad to test themselves against the best team in Spain. A tired squad came out losing 4-2 but learnt some valuable lessons in the process.
Determined to put the lessons learned from the previous day into action, the boys came out with a convincing 9-1 win in another indoor fixture, this time against Junior Sant Cugat. To further test the team, immediately after the indoor game they returned to Egara to do battle again, but this time in an outdoor game. The boys stepped up well, winning 2-0 to end the tour on a high.
