Pianists Perform Music by Mozart

This week the lunchtime series featured Angelina, Samantha, Matthew, Bethany and William all on piano playing extracts and pieces by Mozart. Angelina started the concert off with a controlled and concise performance of the Adagio from Mozart’s E flat major sonata (K.282). She demonstrated excellent musicality, with her rhythmic feel remaining consistent throughout.

Samantha took over from Angelina with the well-known Fantasy in D minor. The piece is technically demanding both harmonically and technically, but Samantha showed musical maturity beyond her years to bring out all the subtleties in a storm of chromaticism.

Matthew brought the tempo back slightly from the fast-paced Fantasy with another Adagio (K.356). The sense of musicianship did not reduce, however, and Matthew’s performance was both sensitive and intuitive.

The last piece was a piano duet performed by Bethany and William and took the form of Mozart’s Theme and Variations in G major. Both players got a turn in the spotlight here, with William taking the lower end of the keyboard but getting a chance with the melodic development nevertheless. The performers were well in sync with each other – by no means an easy feat with such an expressive piece with numerous tempos.

All performers should be congratulated on well-rounded and polished performance, finishing this term’s lunchtime series.
