The U18 Boys Hockey team have been awarded Silver Medals in the National Schools Outdoor Championships this week held at the prestigious Olympic Stadium, Lee Valley and are now runners up in both the Indoor and Outdoor National Finals 2018.
The squad started the tournament well, putting in an impressive performance and a great show of resilience at the semi-final match against Whitgift winning 4-2 on penalty strokes after 1-1 at full time. This victory saw them come up against Repton in the battle to win the national title.
There was a great atmosphere during the matches with many young Oakhamians together with recent Commonwealth Hockey medal winner and OO Kathryn Lane, having travelled to the stadium to support the players. In the Final the game was a close 0-0 draw, until Oakham were down to 10 men and conceded 3 goals to Repton. Oakham scored once they were back to their full squad, resulting in a final 4-1 score to Repton.
Director of Hockey, Mr James Bateman said, “To be the second best team in this country in both the Indoors and Outdoors Championships is outstanding and fully deserved. They are an incredible group of young people who played some brilliant hockey and showed great talent. They worked and trained hard to get this result and I could not be more proud of them.”
Oakham has been enjoying many hockey successes over the past year cementing its reputation as one of the country’s top hockey schools. These include the U18 boys winning Silver in the National Indoor and Outdoor Championships, the 1st XI girls being ranked 6th in the country after having reached the National Finals, both the U16 Boys and U16 Girls being crowned County Hockey Champions, as well as the U13 Boys who have just earned a place in the National Finals.
