Two of Oakham’s rugby players helped the Leicester Tigers Under 18 team become Championship winners this weekend! Cameron and Sam, both Upper School students at Oakham, put points on the board to help clinch the win!
Cameron captained the unbeaten Academy Team to a 43-21 victory over Gloucester Rugby at Allianz Park, home of Saracens, on Sunday afternoon. He also scored an early try, whilst Sam converted four conversions.
“Oakham has always had an incredibly strong relationship with the Tigers, so it’s an incredibly proud moment for the School to see two of our students lift the U18 Academy Championship cup,” says Director of Rugby, Andy Rice. “We always have a steady flow of students playing in their Academy teams, along with players then going on to join the Senior team – including Matt Smith and Tom Croft. Indeed, Cameron has already played in the Tigers Senior team in the final of the Anglo-Welsh Cup earlier this season, which is particularly impressive given he is still at School.”
Interviewed post match, in his role of Captain of the team, Cameron praised the buy in from the whole squad over the last two years, most notably their commitment to training and the grueling sessions on the pitch. He also accounted their win to their non-negotiable standards, and their rigorous setting and updating of goals throughout the season.
Oakham’s Director of Coaching, Ian Smith, was also particularly proud to watch the boys raise the cup, having played, captained and coached at Tigers himself.
