Oakham’s senior boys indoor hockey team are ranked second in the country following an impressive show of talent at the National Finals held at Whitgift School this weekend.
“Being ranked as the second best indoor hockey team in the country is an impressive accolade and a testimony to the team’s talent, and the hard work they’ve put into training,” says Director of Hockey, James Bateman. “It’s a superb achievement, which goes one better than last year when the team narrowly missed out on a place in the final thanks to a nail-biting penalty shoot out.”
It was certainly an exciting tournament, with the team fighting their way through each and every game to reach a place in the finals. They narrowly lost their first game against St Lawrence College, who they then faced again in the finals. Their second game saw them playing against Millfield, and resulted in a draw after an incredibly tightly played match. The team came back stronger on the second day of the tournament – they beat Bedford 4-1 and Altrincham Grammar 6-1 for a place in the semi-final. Here they faced Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School and won 4-0 to reach the School’s first ever national indoor final. The final match was closely contested, with Oakham’s players fighting back to 2-2, after letting in two early goals. St Lawrence’s attacking proved too much though and resulted in a 6-3 win to their team.
“We are now looking forward to our Girls U18 team playing in February, having also won their place in the National Finals, this time, playing outdoors,” concludes Mr Bateman.
