Oakham’s Firefly sailors have been learning from the best, having had the chance to train with the New Zealand international team!
The New Zealand sailors arrived in the UK to take part in The British Open Team Racing Championships, the largest, most prestigious event in the international dinghy team racing calendar. En-route they stopped off at Rutland Water to get some racing practice in – with Oakham’s sailors!
“It was an amazing opportunity to race with an international team,” says Director of Sailing, Nick Neve. “These are world class sailors so the students they were able to really learn a lot from the experience. It was probably the best session we’ve had all term – even though they wiped the floor with us!”
He continues, “It was great for our team to see how clinical the internationals are; and for us to be able to prepare and practice the skills needed on the start line. For them to experience, first hand, such expert pre-start manoeuvres, was a real eye-opener and something they certainly will be able to take forward into their future training and races.”
