Oakhamians ready for Service Weekend

Always a highlight in the Oakham School calendar, activities for Service Weekend are already underway.

Held twice a year in the Spring and Winter terms, Service Weekend gives pupils an opportunity to do something out-of-the-ordinary as part of their D of E award, CCF training or Voluntary Action work.

Pupils involved in Voluntary Action will be helping in a number of different areas within the community. Groups of pupils, accompanied by members of staff, will be building a ‘Bug Hotel’, preparing the beds in town for new plants for Oakham in Bloom, hosting the Spring Luncheon as well as assisting in other areas of Rutland.

Meanwhile, CCF recruits will travel to Beckingham Training Camp in Lincolnshire and RAF Cranwell to build on their military training.

Pupils working towards their Bronze, Silver and Gold D of E awards are setting out on their cycling, walking or sailing expeditions in picturesque locations all over the country. One group will be cycling a part of the Viking Way, while another sails in the Solent, and another walks in the Peak District, amongst other locations. The groups have independently planned their journeys, as well as prepared supplies for the weekend.
