Oakham teams are prize winners at Leicester Technology Tournament
Three teams from Oakham’s Middle and Upper School competed in the annual Rotary Club of Leicester Technology Tournament, and the Junior team emerged victorious with their winning design! This makes it four years in a row that Oakham teams have been prize winners at this event!
Calculated to test the pupils’ design and engineering skills, the teams were tasked with launching carriers and payloads to a height of three metres, as well as returning them safely. Added challenges, such as releasing the launches from a set distance and using a parachute to return the payload, divided the teams and ensured a frantic four hours of planning and manufacturing.
The three teams also had to complete a design portfolio, create a logo and livery for the launcher and payloads, and cope with the pressure of just four and three quarter hours of manufacturing time.
The paperwork and design of the junior team, (Alex, Amy, Archie and Tabitha) were hailed as ‘quite remarkable’ by a number of judges.
Thomas Banham, Teacher of Design and Technology said, “The pupils rose to the challenge magnificently and enjoyed pitting their wits against other local schools. This competition is always a great opportunity for them to work in teams and further develop skills within STEM. The sponsors and rotary club members at the event were able to give great feedback to the teams, and I hope they will be inspired to go into design and engineering fields in the future.”
