Well done to Form 6 student Maddy, whose sailing talents have been recognised by the John Merricks Sailing Trust (JMST) who have awarded her a sailing sponsorship.
Maddy's aim is to represent sailing at the highest level and the John Merricks Sailing Trust were impressed by her dedication and enthusiasm for the sport. They hope their contribution, to competition and training expenses, will make a big difference to her season ahead.
Leicestershire County Council (LCC) via Leicestershire and Rutland Sport have also recognised Maddy's talents and provided sponsorship and gym membership in support of her bid to achieve her success within the sport through their highly competitive ‘Going for Gold’ programme 2018.
Maddy began sailing when she was 9 and has been a member of the National Junior Sailing Squad after a rigorous testing process by the RYA talent ID scheme. She now races with Phoebe Form 5 in a high performance dinghy, a 29er, and will be competing in the Youth National Championships at Largs (Scotland) this March, the National Championships at Hayling Island in June and the European Championships in Helsinki in August.
Maddy said, “I am extremely grateful for JMST and LCC for helping to give me this opportunity. I am really excited about the future and I am fully committed to my sailing. It is something I love and I work hard at it.”
Sailing coach Mr Nick Neve said, “I am incredibly proud of Maddy. Her commitment to regular training on Rutland Water and elsewhere is huge. Off water, Maddy develops her physical and mental resilience in weekly sessions with Zac Bess, our specialist Strength and Conditioning coach, and this is definitely helping her performance. It is an exciting time for her.”
