Oakham students are looking forward to facing a wide array of challenges as part of their Service Weekend over the next three days.
Held twice a year in the Spring and Winter Terms, Service Weekend gives pupils an opportunity to do something out-of-the-ordinary as part of their D of E award, CCF training or Voluntary Action work.
Pupils involved in Voluntary Action will be helping in a number of different areas within the community. Groups of pupils, accompanied by members of staff, will be helping out at the Lodge in Market Overton, planting a tree at the All Saints’ Church for Oakham in Bloom, hosting the Spring Luncheon as well as assisting in other areas of Rutland.
Meanwhile, CCF recruits will travel to Beckingham Training Camp in Lincolnshire to build on their military training.
Pupils working towards their Bronze, Silver and Gold D of E Awards are setting out on their expeditions in picturesque locations all over the country. Cycling a part of the Viking Way, canoeing along the River Soar, walking through the Peak District and sailing in the Solent are just a few of the challenges Oakhamians will be facing. The groups have independently planned their journeys, as well as prepared supplies for the weekend.
