Oakham School recently welcomed 34 boys from the Trinity Grammar School, Melbourne, Australia, who were on a world rugby tour visiting Sri Lanka, Italy and the UK.
The visit was a great opportunity for the students and staff from both schools to share knowledge, skills and form friendships. Ellis Meachen, who has held a number of high-profile positions, including coaching Romania and Tonga, was part of the coaching team so it was also great for all the expert coaches to work together.
One highlight of the visit was the exciting rugby match between Trinity and Oakham’s development XV. Oakham won the game convincingly but Trinity, who had many tired players having played several matches over the past couple of weeks, put up a good fight.
Andy Rice, Oakham’s Director of Rugby, said: “We have enjoyed hosting the boys, and furthering the links between the schools. Now we are looking forward to Oakham’s own Sports Tour to South Africa in the summer.”
The School enjoys several successful twinning relationships with other schools across the world, including this new one with Trinity. Last summer, Form 7 student Eddy spent a rewarding 8 weeks there and commented: “It was an amazing experience for me to be part of a completely different school system. Everyone welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like a member of their community from my first day.”
