Oakham students competed in the first local heat of the Honda Youth RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) Championship held at Rutland Water on Friday. Form 3 competitor Matthew N finished a respectable second in the 13-16 years group.
The Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship has several competition stages starting with local heats, followed by area heats and then finally the National Final held at the Southampton Boat Show in September. The ultimate prize for the winner will be a RIB for their club/school.
The students had to complete a couple of timed runs, which included driving around slalom buoys and reversing. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the exciting challenge and gained good results.
Director of Sailing Nick Neve said, “The Championship is a great opportunity for the pupils to develop their practical boat handling skills from such a young age. They all showed incredible skill and control. To see them driving and at such a high level was brilliant.”
