Oakham’s sailors were in excellent form at the Rutland Youth & Junior Sailing Championships last weekend, with nineteen Oakham pupils out of the 51 competitors winning trophies and accolades.
Form 3 student James was the overall winner sailing a Feva with his team member Issy, winning by a margin of 3 points. Form 7 student Becky and OO Elysia Dooley (17) were awarded first place in the Firefly class and came a close second in the Feva class.
Archie in Form 2, who was in the Regatta Fleet and racing for the first time won the Seamanship Award.
This weekend, fourteen Oakham sailors will compete at the RYA Midlands Championships. They hope to qualify for a much-coveted place in the regional or national squads, where there are only limited spaces available.
Head of Sailing Nick Neve said, “Fantastic results and I am delighted that our sailors were also commended for their politeness and sportsmanship on the water. At the prize giving Becky & Elysia in particular were praised for helping the younger sailors.”
