Oakham linguists have a flair for fashion

Students from Oakham have taken part in ‘Flair for Fashion’, a competition that has seen them learn all about careers in fashion and languages, as well as giving them an opportunity to put their linguistic skills into action. Our pupils did extremely well in the event, with the French team coming second and our Spanish team in third place. One of the attendees, Fourth former Annabel, writes about her experience:

‘On Wednesday 8 February, a team of 12 students went to Nottingham Girls’ High School to a Modern Foreign Languages competition. Oakham School took a French and Spanish team along on the day. The French team consisted of Grace Muris, Sophie Piggott, Laura Crowley, Isobel Fear, Phoebe Ryder and Madeleine Parford. The Spanish team was made up of Annabel Bailey, Ellie-Mae Healey, Joseph Kelly, Beth Leadley, Amani Sadu and Alana Mendes De Oliveira.

The day was led by Business Language Champions, who aim to help youngsters improve their employability skills and realise the importance of language and culture in business and the wider world. The theme of the day was "a flair of fashion" in which we were asked to design a new line of jeans for Levi’s. This included using the language we are studying to produce a market research survey, and then using our findings to create a presentation incorporating our ideas, inspiration and market research in the foreign language. Not only did we have to get used to using our language skills within a business environment but we were also put into teams with three Oakham pupils and three girls from Nottingham Girls’ High School, therefore teamwork and communication were key to success.

An important aspect of the day was having many experienced people from the fashion and business industry there to help; Ena Brown from Nottingham Trent University gave a keynote speech about careers in fashion and languages, which was very insightful. Overall, I feel that we all got something out of the day and I found it very interesting to see how I could combine language with business in later life.’
