Last Sunday, despite the inclement weather, Oakham hosted a highly successful rugby sevens tournament in which 20 of the best rugby-playing schools from all over the UK took part.
Our congratulations to all the teams who participated, in particular the winners:-
U18 Cup: Bedford
U16 Cup: Bromsgrove
U18 Plate: Denstone
U16 Plate: St Edward’s, Oxford
Oakham's U16 and U18 teams put in some fantastic performances during the tournament. The U18 team lost to King's Macclesfield in the Quarter Final having beaten them in the group stages. King's Macclesfield would go on to reach the final losing narrowly to Bedford. The U16s played equally well in their part of the competition, losing by a very small margin to Bedford (12-14), also in the Quarter Final.
“I am really proud of the way our boys played in the tough conditions; they showed great competitive spirit and sportsmanship," says Oakham’s Director of Rugby, Andy Rice.
"My thanks go to all the efforts and hard work of our own Sports Department and Grounds staff in organising and helping to manage the smooth running of the tournament, which along with the Warwick Sevens is the largest in the Midlands attracting teams nationally." continues Andy.
The successful sevens tournament follows the achievements of five of Oakham School’s rugby players who have just been crowned Leicester Tigers Academy Premiership rugby champions after beating Gloucester 34-31 in the Grand Final at Allianz Park.
