Two members of Oakham School’s staff are celebrating after successfully completing the London Marathon.
The months of gruelling training finally paid off as Teacher of Art Ian Prendergrast and Head of Health and Safety Katherine Coleman finished the race in times of 3:47.21 and 5:25 respectively.
Both were inspired to participate in London’s famous competition to raise money for two very worthy causes. Ian will donate the money he raises to The Ear Foundation, which helps children, young people and adults with hearing problems. “As I suffer from tinnitus I have a little understanding of how hearing problems can impact daily life. The Ear Foundation provides technologies that transform the lives of people suffering from hearing loss.”
Katherine is supporting the Teenage Cancer Ward at Leicester Royal Infirmary, which has helped the eldest daughter of a friend during her treatment. “We are so fortunate to have facilities like this available locally; it has made all the difference to my friend and has been a wonderful support to a 13-year old who didn’t want to lose her hair, didn’t want to be off school and didn’t want to be labelled as ‘the girl with cancer’. The Teenage Cancer Ward helped her through that and helped her family hold it together during some really tough times.”
