Oakham School’s Director of Coaching, Ian Smith, has been awarded Life Member status by Leicester Tigers in recognition of his longstanding service to the club.
Ian, who joined Oakham in 1995, is a former Leicester Tigers player, captain and coach. Known as ‘Dosser’ in the Rugby world, Ian was awarded his Life Membership in front of the Welford Road crowd during half-time in Sunday’s Aviva Premiership opener against Bath. His son, Old Oakhamian and Tigers player, Matt Smith, joined him on the pitch to make the presentation alongside the Tigers Club Chairman.
To read more about the Ian’s longstanding relationship with the Tigers (which now stretches beyond four decades), along with the long list of his successes as both player and coach that led to the award of his Life Member status – visit the Leicester Tigers news article.
Oakham has a strong relationship with the Tigers, not just through Ian and Matt – who have made history as the first father and son to reach 100 starting appearances for the club and became the first duo to top 200 games each. Other Old Oakhamians who have gone on to play for Tigers include Lewis Moody, Tom Croft, Michael Holford, Matthew Cornwell, Ben Wheeler, Joe Wheeler and Rob Green.
Our rugby players have also regularly benefited from coaching sessions run by several current and ex-Tigers including: George Chuter, Craig Newby, Austin Healey, Brett Deacon, Tosh Askew, Graham Rowntree, Geordan Murphy, Matt Smith, Anthony Allen, Jeremy Staunton and Lewis Moody.
