15-year-old Hayden Greaves is running up a collection of sporting accolades – including finishing 5th in the recent U17 Leicestershire and Rutland Cross Country Championships.
During this winter training period, Hayden has also won the Rugby School Cross Country event and earned his 14th place finish in the recent Midland XC Championships (U17s).
His talents have seen him selected to run at a variety of levels. At county level, he is a part of the Leicestershire and Rutland team, and he has just been picked to be a part of the CAU Inter Counties U17 Leicestershire team. He has also been chosen to join the eight-man U17 team for the English School Cross Country National Championships, which will be held near Norwich on 18 March.
Hayden undertakes cross country running during the winter as training ahead of the triathlon season, which is his preferred sport. This year he will be competing in the National Triathlon Super Series; a collection of six major events that take place between April and August.
Alongside all of his cross country races, Hayden is currently running 40-50km a week, on top of his swim sessions (4-5 per week) and bike training.
His current focus is the National British Duathlon Championships (to be held at Bedford Autodrome in April), where he was placed 13th Nationally last year. His main goal for the year will be to gain a place in the ETU GB U20s (age group) squad for 2018 for duathlon.
“Hayden is an incredibly talented and inspirational runner,” says Trefon Vandoros, Oakham’s Director of Athletics. “He has an impressive level of focus, which sees him making great sacrifices to train and develop his talents. He certainly is a very deserving recipient of his recent Sports Scholarship.”
