Girls 1st XI through to National Finals playoff match
20 November 2015
The 1st XI Girls Hockey team have earned a place in the National playoffs, after coming a close second in the Midlands tournament.
The girls paced themselves well throughout the day, and although they began with a draw and a loss, pulled it out the bag when it really matters, winning 1-0 against Denstone to put them through to the semi-finals.
In the semi-final match, the team faced their old rivals, Trent College. The girls sprang out of the blocks and were on fire from the start, scoring a great goal through a solo effort from Abi Rawlins. Penny Skipper scored again, another composed deflection from a PCA – 2-0 up in three minutes. We conceded a PCA before half-time, but held on well. In the last five minutes Oakham successfully defended four PCAs. The girls were quite composed, showed bravery and good decision-making.
In the final, Alice Huddlestone unfortunately couldn’t play the final due to injury, and the team ended up losing to Repton 2-0. What was encouraging was that their performance improved in the second half and the girls put up a spirited performance.
Penny Skipper was absolutely outstanding throughout the day, and Amy Schanschieff and Abi Rawlins also showed their class. Rebecca Foster-Collier pulled off the tackle of the season, a goal-saving diving tackle stopping Denstone from scoring. Maddie Pearce and Alice Huddlestone both showed off their international class, and Anna Gonzalez, who stood in for an injured Ali Eatch, was quite superb in goal. Last but not least, Jess Barrett-Drylie was quite superb for a junior player.
As runners up, the girls progress to a national playoff match, hopefully to be played in the first week of December or certainly by the end of term.
