A group of Upper School Geography students travelled to Stamford Arts Centre to hear a talk entitled “The Land Beyond” by Leon McCarron as part of this term’s Oakham Geography Society events.
Teacher of Geography Miss Hannah Campion tells us more:
“Mr McCarron is a Northern Irish adventurer and filmmaker, he is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and specialises in long distance, human-powered expeditions. Speaking on his 5 month, human powered trek across 1000 miles of Middle East, the pupils learnt how Leon battled heat, illness, language barriers and complex topography. Opening pupils’ eyes to a new perspective of conflicted landscapes, it was a great experience for them to meet a true adventurer and explore the perceived dangerous territories of Israel, Jordan and the Sinai Peninsula.”
The next Geography society event is a specialist lecture at the University of Nottingham, which will take place on March 21.
