The Form 3 Music Award Holders: Thomas flute, Daisy clarinet, Ivor bassoon, Daniel horn, Findlay ‘cello, Hattie trumpet/piano and Samantha piano, each brought their individual instrumental skills to the performance on Wednesday. Commencing with just three players, the Trio Facile was delivered with panache and the young players represented the work of the composer Skroup (best remembered for the Czech national anthem) with competence and verve. The Mozart Quintet that followed was scored, rather unusually, for piano, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon. A clarity of line and phrasing characterised this performance and the ensemble was skilful. Next, the colourful and rhythmically exciting arrangement of Martinu’s Charleston (La Revue de Cuisine) was played to finish the concert. The players conveyed a compelling sense of drive and momentum in this performance. The syncopations were deftly delivered and a wide variety of compound sonorities emerged as the group all joined in a fine finale.
